In addition to the pure relocation costs, costs for renovations, double rent payments, the deposit and distance payments dig deep holes in the wallet. With our savings tips you can significantly reduce your moving costs and move with less stress.

Hannah has found a new job in Bristol. Now the family is planning to move from the London to Bristol. Hannah calculates the relocation costs. It quickly becomes clear that the family cannot cover all costs from their current income. The new apartment is larger, but unfortunately also much more expensive than the previous one. But Hannah and her husband are happy to have found an apartment so quickly. The children are also looking forward to the move: Finally, each of them will have their own children’s room. Bristol, the fourth room now has to be furnished anew. In addition, the family dreams of a new, cosy sofa landscape where everyone has room. 1. Sorting and selling

Especially the prices for internet & telephone are changing constantly. Good for Hannah, because this way she can quickly and easily reduce the costs for her new apartment.

3. Reduce renovation costs

In the past, the rental agreement clause for cosmetic repairs has often led to confusion and dispute. In the meantime, some things have changed in favour of the tenants. The legislator has declared some clauses from older rental agreements to be illegal. It is worthwhile having the contract checked by the tenant advisory service – in the best case, the tenant will not have to renovate at all. However, tenants must expect to hand over their flat in its original condition. For Hannah, this means that she will have to paint the colourful walls of her apartment white again. Even the carpet in the children’s room has to be removed. Also the parquet flooring in the living room has to be removed. As time is running out, she solicits offers via portals like MyHammer and Homebell. Hannah chooses the cheapest provider with the best ratings. 4. Apply for special leave when moving

Since Hannah’s move is work-related, her new employer has agreed to support her financially. It is also possible that the current employer will have to give special leave for the move. This works especially well if the employee is transferred from his company to another location.

Legal entitlement to special leave in the event of a move

Two conditions must be met for a statutory entitlement to special leave:

  • The move is operational.
  • The move can only take place during working hours.

Employees are entitled to one day’s leave if they are transferred to another location or if the company headquarters is relocated. In exceptional cases, several days of vacation may be allowed, for example, if the current place of residence is far away from the new place of work. If the new location is close to home, there are no extra vacation days.

5. Choose a clever moving date

Most moves take place at the weekend. Costs for car rentals and removal companies are often higher than on working days. Hannah puts her two vacation days on Monday and Tuesday. So she benefits from the lower prices.

Tip

The best discounts are given by transport companies on the 8th and 22nd of a month – most people move at the end of the month. This drives up prices.

Large vans are usually cheaper. Compared to smaller vans, the rental price is higher, but you save on fuel and mileage costs, because everything fits in and you don’t have to drive several times.

What does a move cost on average?

Moving costs:

  • Costs for the removal company: at the same location from 500 GBP, scaled according to square meters. Long distance removals from 1.200 GBP
  • moving van: truck 50-150 GBP per day, excl. fuel, insurance & deposit
  • No stopping zone: 90-150 GBP
  • Meals for volunteer movers: 6 GBP per person
  • Cartons and packing material: approx. 30 GBP per room

Beauty repairs, rent and deposit:

  • pure painting work approx. 40 cents per square meter
  • double rent payments if necessary
  • service charge settlement for the old flat
  • Deposit for the new apartment: max. three monthly net cold rent in three instalments
  • possibly commission for the broker: max. two net cold rents
  • if necessary, a discount for the previous tenants

Re-registrations and new facilities:

  • Change of Internet & telephone/energy provider: 20-70 GBP
  • car registration change: 20-30 GBP
  • Change of registration at the registration office: approx. 10 GBP
  • Forwarding order with Deutsche Post: 20 GBP for half a year
  • Acquisition of new equipment

6. Terminate the apartment in due time

The moving date should be well planned to avoid double rent payments. Hannah moves in the second week of the month. She has moved the end of the lease to the middle of the month. She has recorded this agreement in writing with her old landlord. I’m glad he agreed to it. Otherwise Hannah would have tried to find a subtenant for the remaining time or suggested a new tenant for the old apartment. In this case, however, the landlord would have had to agree to a subtenancy agreement. She can suggest a new tenant, but in the end it is the landlord who decides to whom she rents the apartment. Here, it is worthwhile for the current tenant to suggest several suitable candidates. The interested parties should have the usual application documents such as a certificate of no rent debts, Schufa information, salary statements and a covering letter ready. This saves the landlord the search and speeds up his decision. And at best you save double rent payments.

If the landlord refuses subtenants or new tenants, you will have to bite the bullet and pay double rent.

7. Moving company vs. voluntary helpers

Moving during the week has one disadvantage: friends and family usually only have time on weekends to help with the move. Hannah therefore obtains offers from moving companies and makes sure that all-inclusive prices are quoted. In this way, she ensures that there are no hidden costs that can interfere with her cost planning. She books three movers with a large van. This means she has to organise much less – even the no stopping zone is registered by the removal company.

8. Free packing material

Hannah and her family pack the boxes themselves. Friendly enquiries at electrical markets have already brought them some large boxes for free. They got banana boxes for free in supermarkets. Searches in classified ad portals resulted in additional hits for moving boxes in the gift category. Old newspapers are suitable for padding the items, but towels and clothing also protect sensitive items.

9. Deducting a move from taxes

The move is now successfully behind Hannah and her family. It went smoothly and Hannah is especially happy that she did not exceed the planned budget. Since the move was made for professional reasons, Hannah can deduct it from her tax bill with the help of the moving allowance. However, since her costs exceed the flat rate, Hannah has kept all receipts for the costs of finding an apartment, the estate agent and the transport and travel costs. She knows from her tax advisor that she can even deduct the extra tuition her son has to pay due to a change of school. A consultation can therefore be worthwhile.

10. Renovation and furnishing of the new apartment

To prevent possible trouble in the new apartment, Hannah checks exactly what is recorded in the handover protocol when moving in. She also photographs any damage that the new landlord has not pointed out. Fortunately, none of this is so serious that she would have to complain about it in writing. Hannah can do minor renovation work at low cost using borrowed tools and inexpensive materials from classified ad portals.
